For a change, if you decide to go to the Elephanta Caves you will have to set sail on the sea. These beautiful caves lay 9 nautical miles into the sea from the Gateway Of India. The beautiful island also known as Gharapuri. Set amidst a verdant surrounding, these 7th century rock cut caves are dedicated to Lord Shiva.
In the Hindu mythology, Lord Shiva holds a pre-eminent position. This is reflected in the Maheshamurti where the sculptures show the God as the creator, protector and destroyer of the universe. Tour operators conduct regular expeditions to Elephanta from the Gateway Of India.
You must remember that that caves remain closed on Monday. From Gateway Of India in Mumbai, Elephanta is reachable by ferry. The Mumbai airport is 20 km away from Gateway Of India and the nearest railway station is Churchgate and Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus. At Elephanta you will not have to worry about accommodation as there are enough quality hotels where you can spend the night.
